"OH MR SOUSA!"

Residency Activities

1. "Sousa In His Lifetime": The two actors who enact the roles of the elder Mr & Mrs Sousa will present a 1-hour session, in which each will relate additional Sousa oriented anecdotes and period history. They will also talk about the show's actual content; further develop selected facts stated in the show; show enlargements of the graphic art that is projected on screen during the actual performance of the staged concert; play a prepared CD of excerpts of Sousa's music not in the show; act out their two scenes and final curtain speeches; and sing two short, delightful songs from the show to piano accompaniment.

2. "If You 'New' Sousa": The Life and Times of America's "Mozart." In this informative session, Dr. Lehr will speak in detail of the era, music and genius of Sousa. The audience will learn of the musical experiences and influences that contributed to Sousa's growth as a musician, conductor and composer, and how these influences ultimately resulted in Sousa's new and unique concert format and style, which led him to be hailed as one of the most famous showmen of his era.

3. “Let’s Write a Show!”: Ken Malucelli, creator of “Oh Mr. Sousa!”, presents an informative hour on how he decided to write, produce and direct the show.  Included will be his own history and personal point of view on working in the fine arts market; obtaining rights; gathering research materials; dealing with estates and royalties; managing a touring company; presentation of musical samples from the show; acting out scenes from the show assisted by local college drama students; and a question-&-answer wrap-up.
